Creative Home Expressions - Thoughts from Long Island

Winter Is Here, Keep Fire Hydrants Clear

I saw my title for this post on a sign outside one of our local firehouses - "Winter is here, keep fire hydrants clear".  This is really an important message, and I was thinking that most people really don't think about the fire hydrant that is on their property.  We all want to clear the driveways and walkways, and get back into the warmth of our homes.

Valuable time could be wasted in the event of a fire for the firemen to have to take the time to clear snow from the hydrant.  On Long Island, where the majority (if not all) of our firemen are volunteers, this is especially important.  So, take those extra few moments, and shovelfuls of snow, and clear the hydrant.

Kathy, excellent advice. Harkens back to our days on Staten Island. In Colts Neck we have no hydrants or sidewalks. Makes fighting fires tougher. God bless our volunteers!

Andrew ~ Absolutely - they have a tough responsibility!  Where I am located (it varies all over Long Island) we have no sidewalk (curbs and fire hydrants though).  So, what do they do then if there is no hydrant?

Kathy, I notice that my neighbors across the street don't think to do this.  It's the only hydrant on the block and I hope this calls attention to the situation.

Kathy, good advice for everyone. Firefighters need to be able to locate the hydrant at all times in emergency situations.

Carole ~ Unfortunately, I never would have thought of it before I saw that reminder.  My closest hydrant is on a neighbors property (at the curb) across the street from me as well.  Now that I am aware of it, you know I will be watching the next time it snows!  Heck, I'll even go over and shovel it out!

Marey ~ Absolutely! And here, sometimes the snow plows just cover them up if we have a lot of snow (along with anything else that may be at the curb).
